Pattachitra Painters of Raghurajpur, Odisha

The major art practiced by artisans in the Heritage village of Raghurajpur is Pattachitra. Literally translated as painting or Chitra in Hindi on patta or leaf. The original artwork was done on palm leaves after cleaning and readying the surface with gum and chalk.

However, with time paintings began on silk cloth mainly Tussar and also on wooden surfaces, paper maches and even bottles.

Not only do you find special articles like bottles and trays with typical pattachitra painting, these painted murals can be found on verandah walls of every household cum workshop.

The designs , to date, revolve mainly around religious figures, deties, essentially Hindu gods!
