On Women’s Day we celebrate empowerment and “nari shakti”.
But across India, women’s bodies tell a more complicated story… one where anaemia quietly coexists with rising obesity, and exhaustion has been normalised.
According to National Family Health Survey-5, 57% of Indian women are anaemic, even as overweight and obesity among women continue to rise.


My latest piece reflects on this paradox of being overweight yet undernourished, and what it says about how women’s health that it is often treated as an afterthought.


Perhaps the real measure of empowerment is not how loudly we celebrate the strength of a few women, but how seriously we take the health of women at scale.
